Green BRI Helps Tackle Climate Change: Xinhua

Chatham House expert says announcements over peak emissions and carbon neutrality ‘surprised many but welcomed by everyone’

China’s initiatives that encourage green infrastructure, energy, transportation and finance under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework are contributing to the global fight against climate change, a British expert told Xinhua.

Antony Froggatt, deputy director of the environment and society programme at Chatham House, a London-based think tank, told the COP26 summit that 57% of China’s investment in BRI partner countries went to renewable energy projects, up from 38% in 2019.

China has said it will strive to reach peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, a move which Froggatt said “surprised many but [is] welcomed by everyone”.
