Canadian Ambassador to China Dominic Barton is resigning, just months after working to secure the release of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor from detention, the South China Morning Post reported.
Barton said in an exit statement that his resignation was effective from December 31. Kovrig and Spavor were detained for more than 1,000 days on charges of espionage before their release in September this year. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the pair’s release was thanks to Barton’s ‘leadership and skilled diplomatic approach’, the report added.
