A trove of over 124,000 confidential data files reveals how the cab-hailing service Uber “flouted laws, duped police, exploited violence against drivers and secretly lobbied governments” from 2013 to 2017, when the tech giant was run by co-founder Travis Kalanick and pursued a policy of aggressive global expansion, a report by The Guardian says.
Lobbyists for Uber secretly met national leaders and influential powerbrokers such as Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz while protests and controversy raged over whether the company was flouting laws and regulations, the report says. It used a ‘kill switch’ to prevent authorities from gathering evidence from its main data system if its offices were raided, the report alleges.
