Concern as coronavirus from Russia leaks into China

(ATF) A second major coronavirus outbreak has led to China building a 600-bed hospital on the border with Russia at the port of Suifenhe.

This outbreak, reported by Asia Times Financial recently, has been caused mainly by Chinese citizens leaving Russia via the river port. But the port is now closed, Chinese  state media outlet CCTV says.

Interfax News Agency reports that Russia has identified over 2,500 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, and the total sickness rate has exceeded 18,300, the operative headquarters for the coronavirus response said in a statement on Monday.

“Over the past day, 2,558 Covid-19 cases have been registered in 62 regions of Russia,” the statement said.

60 cases on Russia-China flight

China News Weekly says many people with the disease flew to Shanghai from Russia recently on a single commercial flight.

On one flight from Moscow to Shanghai carrying 204 people, 60 passengers turned out to be confirmed cases. This was 30% of people on the flight.

According to a Shanghai Municipal Health and Health Commission report on April 12, the Russian Airlines flight SU208 departed from Russia on Friday April 10 and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on the same day. The diagnosed cases were all Chinese nationals returning to their homeland.

Cases ‘imported’ from Russia have caused another wave of “small peaks” in China’s epidemic.

According to statistics, 243 cases were reported in Suifenhe City in Heilongjiang, plus 71 cases in Manzhouli in Inner Mongolia, 60 cases in Shanghai, and 35 cases in Shanxi.

The above figures were reported as of noon on April 13, with confirmed cases of Covid-19 imported from Russia totalling at least 409 people.
