Small modular reactors (SMRs), pushed by China nuclear experts and others, as an alternative to fossil fuels, might produce more radioactive waste than traditional plants when generating the same amount of power, New Scientist reported, citing recent research.

Lindsay Krall at Stanford University used data by manufacturer NuScale Power and found SMRs – being developed for China and elsewhere – could increase the volume of some waste by up to 35 times compared with a large conventional reactor.
