China will reduce the time needed for approval of travel by US business executives to no more than 10 days, Qin Gang, ambassador in Washington, said on Thursday.

Qin told a dinner hosted by the US-China Business Council that Beijing would also work to make Covid-19 testing more convenient and would allow executives to work during quarantine.

Under China’s Covid-19 elimination strategy, Beijing has enforced more than 18 months of border closures and restrictions, including three-week quarantine stays and fewer business visas .

A recent survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai showed that more than 70% of members had difficulty attracting and retaining foreign talent, mostly due to pandemic curbs.

“Getting business executives — and their families — in and out of China has been extremely difficult since the global pandemic began,” Ker Gibbs, AmCham Shanghai chairman, wrote on Facebook.

Gibbs is leaving China earlier than planned due to the restrictions.
