Researchers from China’s Nanjing University are covering Dagu glaciers in the Sichuan province with thick rolls of white sheets that are designed to reflect the sun’s radiation and slow down climate change-induced glacier melt, according to a report by the South China Morning Sun.

The water-friendly and reusable “glacier blankets”, backed by Chinese tech giant Tencent’s Carbon Neutral Lab, are “three to four times better” than materials previously used to achieve the same result. But researchers warn they are only a temporary solution as covering the entire glacier would have massive costs and be “completely uneconomic”.
