The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank “will not hold this year’s annual meeting in Russia as planned”, according to a report by Nikkei, which said the China-backed institution may be “bending to international condemnation of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine” given that it has also halted investment and financing projects in Russia.
Russia was picked last year as the venue for the annual meeting in late October, but the bank has announced that a virtual meeting will be hosted from the AIIB headquarters in Beijing instead. It has also suspended all activities in Belarus, the report said.
