The first international freight train to use the rail link from China to Laos set off from Shenyang in northeastern Liaoning province on Friday morning, carrying 42 containers loaded with mechanical and electrical items, consumer goods and auto parts, the state media service Xinhua reported.

The freight train began its first leg of a 10-day journey, which officials said was five to 10 days less than it would take to ship the goods, it said, presumably via Thailand or Cambodia. The 1,000km line from Kunming to Vientiane, which opened in December, usually runs high-speed services for both passengers and freight.
