Morning sessions of securities and derivatives markets suspended due to big storm

(AF) The first ‘black’ storm warning of 2021 led to the closure of schools, vaccination centres and trading on Hong Kong exchanges in the morning on Monday June 28.

The warning, issued by the Hong Kong (Weather) Observatory, at 8.20am predicted heavy rain exceeding 70 millimetres an hour.

Citizens were advised to seek shelter, while drivers were urged to get off the road as flash floods were expected near watercourses.

The warning caused the suspension of Covid-19 vaccinations at community centres, although they remained open as shelters for staff and visitors.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing said the morning sessions of securities and derivative markets were cancelled, including the Stock Connect link with mainland China.

The warning was dropped three hours later, after some area suffered landslides and severe flooding.

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange said trading would resume for the afternoon session after the black rainstorm warning as the extreme weather conditions eased.

This report was updated with further information.
