Anna Nguyen walked toward Bao Quang temple, ready to chant and pray to the majestic golden Buddha, the Los Angeles Times reported. With the lunar new Year nearing, she would make an offering of $100 and ask for blessings.

Then her phone rang. It was her cousin, questioning the wisdom of going inside the temple in Santa Ana, with the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus variant circulating.
