Tesla-Supplier CATL Reveals More Powerful Battery Cell – Yicai

CATL’s new Qilin cell will deliver high mileage at a low price, according to the scientist behind its development

Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is set to launch a new battery cell with a capacity 13% higher than that of battery cells in US electric vehicle maker Tesla’s cars, Yicai Global reports.

CATL’s new Qilin cell will deliver high mileage at a low price, Wu Kai, the scientist in chief at the Ningde-based company, said at the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum on Saturday. Tesla’s 4680 battery cell – developed by Japan’s Panasonic in September 2020, which is the same size as the Qilin one – was six times more powerful than the 2170 cells used at the time, and increased Tesla’s EVs’ range by 16%.
