Major conglomerates in Korea are working to form a battery waste recycling alliance, as the electric vehicle sector is set for exponential growth in coming years, company officials said on Tuesday. The alliance consists of Samsung SDI, Hyundai Motor, SK On and LG Energy Solution (LGES), plus seven small and medium-sized enterprises related to batteries and waste resources, such as Woojin Industrial Systems, Wonkwang Electric Power and Sungil Hitech, The Korea Times reported on Wednesday.

The group plans to build the country’s first all-in-one battery reuse-remanufacturing-recycling business at the EV/ESS Battery Recycling Industrialisation Centre in Naju, South Jeolla province. It wants to develop equipment related to the secure dismantling and reuse of batteries. EV and battery makers have already been collaborating on the reuse of battery waste, but this is the “first time for all four leading conglomerates to work in sync,” it said.
