Japan’s Supreme Court has settled the issue of compensation for about 3,700 people forced to evacuate from their homes due to the meltdown at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in 2011 by ordering operator Tokyo Electric Power Co to pay about 1.4 billion yen ($12.2 million) in damages, Asahi Shimbun reported.
The next item before the court is to decide whether the government should also be held liable for shouldering the compensation burden. It will begin hearing arguments about the government’s responsibility from April and is expected to rule on the issue this summer.
