The US Department of Transportation (DOT) said on Wednesday that Air China agreed to pay a $143,000 fine over delays in 2018 at US airports.

The department said Air China had allowed international flights to remain on the tarmac for more than four hours without providing passengers an opportunity to get off the plane.

The department said under its civil penalty order that Air China must pay $143,000 within 30 days, and another $143,000 if it violates the order within a year.

The airline did pay $14,000 in compensation to passengers.

“DOT will hold airlines and ticket agents accountable when they treat consumers unfairly,” US deputy transportation secretary Polly Trottenberg said.

“These fines should serve as a warning to all airlines and online ticket agents that the Department will take enforcement action against violations of aviation consumer protection rules.”
